When I'm driving along and come to a junction or in traffic and slow down as soon as I press the clutch to get neutral the engine dies, the revs just slowly fade away, kicks straight back in on the turn of the key but I just don't know where to look, head gasket maybe?
This is a standard 998 engine.

Do the rev's drop at all when you drop the clutch? What type of clutch does it have?

it's got a valoe Verto clutch in, the revs don't alter with the clutch in or out.

Clean the dashpot and piston and let us know if that works.

What a dick I am, I've whipped off the dash pot and cleaned it out, was a bit shitty, took out the piston and tipped it up side down and all the oil has run out and I don't have anything to put back in it, any household suggestions to get me to the shop, what's the best oil for the dash pot? That su stuff or something else?
Also on the ignition front I've just took the vac advance off and it pulls a hell of a lot better without it attached to the dizzy.

It will run OK without any. Just open and close the throttle slowly on the pedal. When I did an engine conversion many years ago I forgot to put any in a dry carb, it made some good flames according to my mate following until I put some oil in.

Cheers for that, off to the shop I go. Any particular grade of oil best? The irony as I've just put a litre in the car this morning and got none left now.

It just won't rev up with no oil in, I've got some multipurpose general oil somewhere, I'll put a bit of that in for now, see if it works.

That will be fine wez. I think we ended up using some random diesel oil in the van.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Thanks for everyone's help, I've just put some general purpose oil in for now that I found in amongst my odds and ends, and tadge44 you were correct, tick over on the spot and whilst driving is fine again, also it's cured my misfire under load with the headlights on as well ! And I would of never suspected the carb for that, had my money on an electrical fault all day long! Thanks a lot for your help *smiley*
