Or should I rather take the bearing apart, undo the nut & push of the bearing? And use a pipe welded to the nut to pull the input gear? Opinions?

Thanks!

Jan

Take the bearing apart, undo the nut enough to push the bearing forward 3-4mm, then run the nut back. Use a puller to get the rest of the bearing of, then remove the nut and lock tab. the gear should just slide of. I've never had to use a puller for them.

I want to use this to pull the whole shaft without dismantling the bearing. Sorry, wasn't precise enough :)

How do you get the shitty big circlip out that retains the bearing with the input gear in place?

right angle circlip pliers will do it,

ive got the whole assy out with a pair of screwdrivers before in a pinch,

I'd say whack a load of duct tape round the gear so your not bearing directly on the gear and go ahead.

It's a little bit fiddly, but doable with short angled circlip pliers :) Proof:

So far I've aleways knocked the 1st motion shaft out via the main shaft; but never felt realy comfortable doing this... So I made sliding hammer out of two pot joints & random scrap to pull the 1st motion shaft :)

@Joe: That's a good idea!

Looking at your puller, it Goes behind the input gear, but then pushes against the 1st motion shaft. So all you will do is bend the puller and/or strip the threads from the front bit...

I'm assuming you are going to run a bolt down the centre of it?

Without sounding like a tw@... Why not just do it properly? It doesn't take much longer and everything goes back together easily...

'Cause it's much quicker :) Clip off, pull out and vice versa. You just knock in the assembly, push the circlip down & your done. Removing it doesn't take me much time with the gear in place (practice).

What's the proper way then? :)

Nice idea. Saves risking destroying the support bearing by trying to remove it off the 1st motion shaft anyway! Then having to go though the whole removing the outer bearing from the transfer housing malarky. *oh well*
