Righty, my tin of POR15 arrived today so im all set to paint my front subby. Ive had a look on the tin and it says apply thin coats, leaving it 3-5hours between coats (until its very slightly tacky). My plan was to paint all the 'unseen' bits first like inside the towers and the underside of the subframe, and then paint the top side.

How many coats does it generally take to give a good finish? And can you apply another coat after the paint has fully cured?

I usually work on my car in the evenings, but I don't want to be up all night waiting for the paint to dry to apply another coat. lol Basically im just trying to do some forward planning. :)

Cheers
Matt

I've applied a second coat days after on my car and it's been fine.

My first attempt at painting it didn't go well, peeled of when I touched it. As always with paint, it's all in the prep.

Don't get it on your skin! It takes days to come off. And it runs easily as it's very thin, so don't put much on your brush.

Cheers Andy.

It says that you need to use there primer if its going onto smooth metal, but im guessing they mean like if you were applying to a new piece sheet for example. Ive wire brushed the whole subframe so do you think that would be enough of a key?

I had a problem with my new tank (estate type), when it had cured it just pealed off in a big sheet. So, nice an clean with some keying is probably the best idea.

Also head the warning about dispensing it and then cleaning round the rim of the pot before replacing the lid. Any POR 15 remaining in the lid or rim will seal the pot forever.

Haha I read that warning too! It says to use a coffee scoop or something to take out what you need out of the tin.

Im tempted to leave the subby out in the rain for a few weeks, as rust seems to be the most reliable way to get the paint to stick. lol

I did underneath the boot floor on mine. Cleaned it up with a wire wheel on the grinder and stuck it on. It peeled of and there was a load of new surface rust.

If you look on Frost's site, they do a full kit with the metal ready and primer, I'll be getting that for my subframes - they'll be getting shot blasted first.

Use the metal ready first, it makes the metal ready for the por :) . Are you using black? Two coats will be enough, you can apply the second after approx 3/4 hours.
Never get it on your skin, if you do get it off asap with thinners. Once it cures its not coming off without your skin!
Also cling film before putting the lid back on.

Is metal ready clear? i bought a full clear por 15 kit ages ago to treat my bare metal shell, was adviced first por15 then glisten pc laquer over it to prevent discoloration

not keen if it peels of though! thought the stuff kind of get in to the metal and make a bond somehow

Yeah, for fucks sake don't get it on your hands, I painted the entire underside of my car with it after it had been sand blasted and I almost went back to the blaster to get him to clean my hands... it took about 2 weeks before it started to shift

Tom - did you use the metal ready primer before painting it on?

To get it off, have a really hot bath and soak your hand for a bit. The scrub like fook. Not pleasant, but it shifted it in a few days for me...

Just dip your hand in acid, it will come off with your skin. Sorted

Use a flap wheel to get it off.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Well the painting of the subframe couldn't of gone any worse!!! *angry*

All looked well and good when I left it this afternoon, went to fit it onto the shell this evening and its all blistered and looks terrible! I had a breif attempt at sanding it with 400grit and it does JUST about flat back but its going to take forever.

Has anyone tried to get the stuff off? Im thinking wire brush on a grinding wheel?
