Ah right, I think I'll be on the safe side and get a proper one, there are a few for a good price on eBay at the moment, at least then it will be one less thing to worry about when I decide to wind up the boost..

Tried to finish off the carb rebuild today, got stuck with this little b*stard...



How do i get it out? I don't have a socket thin enough to be able to reach it, cant get a hack saw in there to be able to screw it out, couldn't pry it off as i read somewhere some carbs have tamper proof caps?

Can anyone help?

I got mine out by rotating it with a drift and hammer.

Once out, cut a slot in it with a hacksaw.

Ahh, that might work, I'll have at it with a hammer today...

And I've not heard that before? Might be worth a little investigation as valves falling out could be a little problematic... I do have the proper collets and the spring clips to hold them in?

Spent today rebuilding the carb, only ended up with a short carb, and the BDD needle in there was somehow completely goosed, no idea how it could have happened, i'll get some pics of it up tomorrow.

Found a load of this white crystalline crap in various places..


Got the float chamber sorted


Throttle and choke done


and just cleaned up the piston assembly.

Also found this bad boy in the garage,


and decided to make the bracket for the cables, no pics yet, also manage to find our only hole saw which turned out to be 1 3/4 in, stroke of luck

Finished Uni for the summer last month, got a jo and got refunded some accommodation money from Uni because I moved out early, so decided to use that money to get cracking with the engine build :)

Got the engine split, was on the way to minispares for some bits, and some knob cut me up on a roundabout and then proceeded to emergency brake, it was pissing it down at the time and the wheels locked up and I skidded into the back of the golf. Thankfully I had my foglights onthe front, which to most of the impact and means that the slam and bonet are only slightly misfigured, but all the plastic glass was smashed on the front and the grill is a complete gonner.

As I was on the way to minispares though I managed to get most of the bits I need to replace, just need to ring a grille. Also got a 1275 pump and central oil pick up.

So the engine is in pieces getting a new coat of red and the central oil pickup is fitted, pending the gaskets I forgot to get


Head has been sent to smart performance for unleaded seats and some new guides

Just need to get some money together for an x pin diff and the engine will be sorted :) I was going to run it in N/A while I finish things like the manifold, is that okay to do? Or would I be better to wait and run it in with the turbo?

sorry to hear about the accident what did your insurance say are they saying your to blame ? or him as he cut you up?

Done now needs redoing lol

I havnt told them yet, there was no damage to the golf and no one was injured, so I don't know if they're planning to make a claim, but I should be able to just pull the bonnet straight again and nudge the slam panel back into place and it'll be fine.

And I'm not quite sure who's to blame, if I hadn't have locked the wheels then I think I would have stopped in time, but then if they hadn't cut me up I would have had the space to brake normally..

Finished the oil pump today, was fairly simple, just got the grinder out, and then drilled some holes. just need a tap the right size for the bolts.

Got the cam timed in, flywheel on etc, and just waiting on a few things i forgot to get from minispares..


Also got the head back from smart performance, some pretty cracking work:




And where we're up to so far, should be getting the last of the turbo stuff soon.

Getting a properly ported head will come in the future, I just wanted one that works, and wouldn't cost me lots of money.

12G295s do not have any brass plugs.

Got a nice package in the post this week, courtesy of Adamt, who was really helpful with the sale and the postage, which means I can finally finish all the bits and pieces like intercooler piping and oil drain.

Some more progress since last time though, engine is built up, carb is finished (although missing the mixture adjusting screw?) and with the new job I havnt had much time to do things. The upside though is ill have a load of money come september

Big day today, started the process of taking the old engine out, didn't get much done because i spent most of the afternoon at Classics on the Common in Harpenden. saw a brown estate with the turbominis on the screen, Didn't seen the owner though.

Just considering whether i need to take the brake servo out the way to get the engine out, but got a fair bit done:




And the parents have gone to Spain for 4 weeks, so the kitchen table now looks like this:


Also had to send the Diff back to the garage because I was a pillock and asked them to put the bearings on without the crownwheel attached to the cage, so i couldn't get the bolts on..

We live and learn eh..

Managed to get the engine out today, it's the first time i'd done it, and have certainly learnt a lot... Mainly to just hire a hoist rather than dicking about with other methods.

The old engine is now sitting in the garage, and will probably be there for a while, but the new one should be going in very soon, just a few small things to sort out; Oil feed and drain, and just cleaning and painting the bits that have just come off the old engine, and then it'll be time for putting the new engine in.

Plan is to have it ready and rolling roaded for the track day at castle combe.

Actually got a Porche turbo bosch inline pump off ebay for about £20, so should be up to the job :)

I didn't know the Ka one fits the tank?
