Iv'e managed to bend the same valve twice now in the space of 6 weeks, and it looks like the valve guide is a bit worn!*frown*

Last time the valve bent i replaced all of the exhaust valves just to make sure it wasn't a case of crappy valve quality!

Is fitting and reaming valve guides the kind of job you need to take to a specialist?

I've got acces to milling machines etc. so i was thinking of putting them in myself, or is that a bad idea??

I've mic'd the valve stem and its 7.1mm dia (non sodium) what kind of clearance should i be aiming for if i do them myself?

Any help/advice would be quality , cheers*happy*

drift the old valve guids out and place the new ones in the freezer for an hour then press the new ones in to the
correct depth! which is usually flush with the top of the head!

the idea of reaming the guides is a little misguided, because what happens when you press the new guids in you bruise the tops slightley hence you need to pop a reamer down to rectifie this and thats all!
the guides are the the correct size as they come ! out of the packet.

i wonder why? you have bent the valves twice?????

this seems a rare occurence on an A series engine!

you say you have machined the valve stems ?

i would personally get some race inlet valves from minispares and fit those and retain the sodium filled exaust valves

having said that a lot of chaps on hear run race exaust valves none sodium and are quite happy the meterial they are made of is i think 214N stainless far superier quality to standard valves

As they are one peice forgings.

because you have bent the valves ? is this because you are machining these standard valves causing weakness in the stems and the turbo heat is further compound this for you!!!! ????

goood luck!*wink*

hi you need a 9/32 reamer for the guides.

i can get the reamers for £10 each and a valve guide setting tool which i make for a £5 plus postage.

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

The first time i bent the valve, i was running the engine in and the engine was only doing about 2500rpm and as i was running it in i rarely used the turbo so there shouldn't of been too much excess heat!!

It must of been down to a bit dirt getting into the guide or something during the build?

I think the guide may of got damaged the first time the valve bent as it had a bit more play in the guide than the rest.

Its been alright since, untill i gave chase to a new "mini" as it was the "weakest" valve that seemed to not shut quite as quick as the other valves, hence hitting the piston!*frown*

Im using the minispares race valves C-aeg107 (off the top of my head i think thats the number)?

Cheers for the tips, it doesn't sound to be as difficult as i thought!

I'll have a hunt round for ream if i cant see one the right size i know where to come ! cheers lads*happy*

Good news ive sorted my valve guides out now n the turbs back on the road but.....

I thought the tapping noise was coming from the valve tapping the piston every now and again but ive been doing some test runs.....not good!!!!*frown*

I can rev it up to 6000RPM no probs in 1st and 2nd gear but in third and 4th a tapping noise starts about 4500-5000RPM ish...

It only does it sometimes, rarely in cold weather so its got to be pinking-hasn't it?

As that valve guide was the tightest out of all of them it must be sticking first due to the pinking( excessesive heat)!!

Anyone have any other ideas as to what the noise could be at all?

Ive got an intercooler ready to fit, just need some cash to get the hoses etc, are there any other ways i can test if it is pinking?

My sister is so fit I won't show anyone her picture

You could try retarding your timing slightly and see if the noise is still there ?

Is it a kind of "ting ting" kind of noise? More prevalent when the engine is under load (e.g. full throttle at low engine speed in high gear) if so it is pinking.

That is the best description I can give you, it is one of those noises you just learn to know by sound!

matty it sound to me like its pinking, DETONATION !

what you described to us

if you hear that noise again back off on the gass as the engines life is threatend!

first to go will be the head gasket between cylindars 2&3
for sure then you will melt the pistons

not a good scenarion at all buddy. *frown*

what c/r are you running and how much boost .???

fitt the intercooler this should be your next priority *wink*

Its only starts in 3rd and 4th gear (under load), yeah i do backoff.

Im not too sure what C/R im running, when i bought my pistons i was told that they had some stupid sized dish in them, since then ive found out there not!!*angry*

Im only running it at 4psi ( a bit lame i know) at the moment just to get the teething problems out of the way first and im not sure on the C/R.

What size dish do 1293cc piston usual come in? I know they havn't been machined out?

I should be able to work out what the highest C/R i might be running then, and go from there.

Yeah got an intercooler just saving for Hoses, bleed valves etc.

Its my everyday driver at the moment, and its not the most practical car in the world! LOL

the best way i can think of describing the noise pinking makes is that its sounds kinda like the ignitor on gas hobs, you know the click click click noise....lol

also heard someone say it sounded like a bag of washers being thrown into a washing machine *happy*

Got the pinking to stop now.

Im waiting to get my intercooler fitted before i get it Rolling roaded.

"the best way i can think of describing the noise pinking makes is that its sounds kinda like the ignitor on gas hobs, you know the click click click noise....lol"

That is spot on what it sounded like. I was unsure before because most people say its more of a "ting" or "ring" noise- i guess it must vary?
