I have to stress this is not my gearbox, it's a friends.

He bought this mini - a 1972 mini 1000. When he bought it and drove it home he noticed it crunched a little going into 2nd from third - a normal mini worn part.

So in his ultimate wisdom he took it to Somerford Mini who said the bulkrings and sychro's were worn and it'd need a rebuild. So he instructed them to carry out the rebuild...

He picked it up, they'd fully rebuilt the box and fitted a new clutch (£1k there or there abouts...). Now it crunched going from 4th to third. So he phoned up and gave them a fucking good bollocking. Later on he realised they'd also not fitted the oil dip stick back in...

So they take it back, rebuild the box and call him today and tell him that the box was rebuilt with a brand new third gear, bulk ring and selector but it still crunches going from 4th to 3rd and that he needs a full gear set which is another £700...

They also said they could nothing looked out of place when they rebuilt the box

WTF have they done? is it me or have they pulled a fast one here? or do you think they are genuine? I don't know enough about gearboxes to help so an asking the many experts on here for help!

Perhaps the clutch is dragging?

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

I suppose it could be possible, its is an A series not an A+ after all.

You'd think.

£1K...fook im in the wrong job!

If it was clutch drag wouldn't all of the gear changes drag a little?

With illiminating any problems with the box, how about checking the selector yoke for excess play?

I'm wandering if they actually did anything at all...

They had the car on Monday, got it back Wednesday seems a bit quick?

But the suggestions are great - thanks.

I have given him the link to this page so he can refer to it
