I could do with some advice;

Due to circumstances I need to change to a car with cheaper running cost.
I have been looking at the V50 1.6D; not too heavy, nice economy and enough space and safety for the girls.
The only thing holding me back is stories I hear about the engine; mainly all kind of turbo issues but also DMF.

I did a search and found Wolfie had to replace DMF at 105k (miles), from what I read on the web this is normal?

Now to the point;
I have found a nice example Edition II Sport, ex-lease, april 2006, 205k kms, with carbon filter.

I will check service history for regular oil changes and whether starter has been changed (DMF).
Any tips from you guys on what to check and what to look out for when testdriving (to find out what condition the turbo is)?

Many thanks in advance!

we have the ford/french 2.0 dci engine thats fitted to the focus, dmf's in general last approx 100k on average imo from most manufacturers, if you do have to do the dmf then use LUK parts and do the slave cylinder when the gearbox is off

the 1.6 diesel has issues with the turbo and when there changed you have to drop the sump and clean/replace the pickup and do some other bit or there is no warrentee on the turbo

we have had no other issues from ours the build quality is good and its easy to service and look after, ours now has around 138000 miles on i think (i dont drive it much) its the most comfertable car i have ever driven and would have another however i think we will be changing it for a touran end of year but wont be having the 1.6 diesel

Cheers Wolfie, much appreciated.

I guess buying second hand is always a risk.
Won't mind having to replace something next year, just can't use high maintance right away (which is pending on the V70) as I'm going through a divorce which is costly!

Any way to detect a DMF or turbo failure is coming on soon (apart from performance loss)?

From my experience with the infamous Ford (2l Mondeo TDCi) DMF you get a distinctive rattle at idle as the two halves hit the limit stops. You also have the starter jam regularly from the metal swarf produced by the two halves rubbing against each other but of course the starter may have been replaced to hide the underlying DMF failure (a starter motor change is cheap, a DMF change is not....).

The death rattle will allways go once the revs rise (as the two halves no longer have to move relative to each other) but the Mondeo engine has another endemic design fault - Aux belt tensioner - which sounds very similar.....

The turbo on my Mondeo (GT1749VNT) just failed with no warning - shaft broke in two...... running fine then no boost and a cloud of blue smoke....

For what it's worth, EuroCarParts told me (when buying my new DMF) that the Ford one is their best seller and the VW/Audi 2l, their second best - they didn't mention the VW/Audi 1.6

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

rattle on idle (sounds a bit like release bearing rattle) and irregular idle
