Have yours rebuilt.

A second hand turbo is exactly that. I wouldnt expect any to last long tbh.

Is it definately the turbo that is the issue here?

I changed stem seals 2 years ago and rebuilt my turbo at the same time, it still smokes so I guessed I rebuilt the turbo wrong, I got a secon hand one with hardly any play and it still smokes, I then had the engine rebuilt and it still smokes.
So I am now pretty sure that the turbo is at fault. There is no smoke when accelerating but at idle there is a huge cloud. And on over run when I accelerate at the bottom of a hill etc.
I have literally spent up I am so skint I have to reluctantly sell stuff I have been saving for it so don't think I can afford a rebuild but i would take almonds word on here?

Eden - pm sent

Thanks. Dan

sounds like baggy exhaust valve guides to me. we had the same problem on the upside down skip

Howcome exhaust valves and not turbo?
I really would like to understand what the difference is with symptoms as I didn't think it could loose that much oil through the guides, I am not joking last year it was a full 5 litre bottle every week.

Thanks. Dan

Another vote for baggy valve guides.

Bet if you take the manifold off the exhaust ports will be full of oil.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Trying 2 different turbos, one being freshly built and neither fixed the problem tells me the turbo isn't the prob.

Go have a quick look at your stem seals. Have they lifted off of the guides? This seems quite common.

John I will check this. I did change the seals at the same time as rebuilding the first turbo but made no difference. I will see if they are still seated.
Arranging to have the head sorted now, thanks for advice everyone,

Dan
