I bought an engine a while ago which I was assured was a turbo unit, but I'd really like to verify this. It seem to be all late metro stuff and came with the correct bits, turbo/manifolds/ecu/fuel regulator/airfilter. However the plate held on with brass studs that usualy has numbers on is missing so I'm not sure how else to identify.
Heres a few pics I just snapped does anyone have any thoughts on what it could be? If needed i can take more pictures.

Take the rocker box off and see if it has the larger stem exhaust valves? That will help you ID it. Other than that it is strip it time to find out anything more.
You could also pull the flywheel and remove the drop gear casing, to see if it has the larger OD first motion shaft bearing.

hi andy *smiley*

the WMF 1024 on the front of the block is a good clue ita a turbo engine

remove the rocker cover and measure the top of the inlet valve and then measure the top of the exaust valve

the exaust valve is a larger diameter on the stem, shank, top

forgoten the sizes ?

but the exaust valve stem is larger because on the turbo motors they sport sodium cooled EXAUST valves

hope you find what your looking for buddy*happy*

Ok thanks for the quick replies guys

Just been out the measure the valve stems. Just used a pair of tweezers and a ruler so not the most accurate but there's deffinately a difference in size, they appear to be 8mm and 7mm. Does this sound right?

*happy* Good stuff *happy* sounds as though it could be genuine then. I'm tempted to accept the block as a turbo unit going on all the bits it came with and the head looking turbo aswell. Just puzzled as to why the identification plate has been removed*oh well*

If the block has been flashed at some point that is when the id plate gets lost.
Also the fact it is all painted up silver would suggest to me that maybe its been in bits before.

Turbo heads had a T stampted on the top of the head, between rocker cover and heater tap. or between rocker cover and thermostat. i cant remember which side.

What would flashing be not really familiar with that term?

The guy I got it off said it was intended for a grasstracker but he decided to go down the N/A route instead. If I remember correctly he said it was all standard bar the turbo which has had a rebuild.

As for the paint  heh that was my idea and I obviously didn't do a very good job at the time because it seems to have rusted a bit. With hindsight it looks a bit charva now though so I think it'll be getting a new (less rushed) lick at some point.

I just noticed there is a T stamped into the top left side of the head next the rocker cover, which would be another nod in the right direction *happy*

a very light skim over the top of the block face...... hence you 'skim' off the engine number plate.
