Picked up a K1200 head at a decent price. However the magnesium cam cover is cracked.

Can you weld them? I've read conflicting opinions. Some people spout the school experiment where the magnesium ignites where as others say it's a mag alloy and can be tigged. If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of. |

I was joking, hence the wink, but I suppose it depends how much magnesium is in there.

How do people generally fill oil on k-head cars? I've see some have fillers welded on the covers and other have used dizzy holes etc? If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of. |

It can be welded, it will only be a percentage magnesium. The hardest bit will be getting it clean enough.

Funnily enough Tom I had read about magnesium MI16 covers so thought you may have some input. If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of. |

How bad is it. As it's only a cover and not reallt stressed I'd be tempted to use a bit of JB weld. Fastest 998 mini in the world? 13.05 1/4 mile 106mph

It would most likely fix easily enough with JB weld TBH. Just at bit unsightly. If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of. |

Are any mods required to the cover for fitting to a mini? (other than perhaps an oil filler?) Both are like rocking horse shit these days in useble condition, and when they do crop up fetch anywhere between £40 and £80. K1100 ones cost around £120 new. look further afield. ebay.de is where you will likely find one at a good price. I ended up shipping one in from the US and cost £80 all in. The standard k1100 covers don't seem to weld well even for someone who tig welds aluminium all day every day, maybe som zinc content? or it might just be down to the years of use exposed to oil. On 26th Oct, 2004 TurboDave16v said:

We used to use Devcon to repair alloy blocks and heads at Astons, it goes off rock hard after a couple of days can be filed flat and painted I seriously doubt it! |
