Hi,

I'm currently trying to get my mini running after a few months of it being sat idle. I've found that when I try and start the engine it will only fire up on the choke as soon as I take the choke off its cuts out and will not restart unless I give it some choke. It won't start if I put my foot on the accelerator and try and turn the key. It almost seems like it isn't getting any fuel without the choke. I'm running a 1 3/4" turbo SU. I've had the carb off and cannot see anything obvious. No fuel in the float. Totally baffled! Any ideas anyone?

Thanks

Graham

Have you tried giving the mixture screw (next to the fuel inlet) a turn in (clockwise).

In the 13's at last!.. Just

Yeh, have had it that rich that that the screw is all the way in. I'm about 2 turns from all the way in and I get nothing.

This happened on my std 998 and as suggested by someone on here I had dirt in my dash pot, quick clean inside and on the piston and it was fine.

one day boost will be mine!

I did have that off and everything looked fine, but I'll give that a go. Cheers!

Have you checked for air leaks? If the manifold gasket is frigged or youve not blocked the servo breather properly it will be running very very very lean hence the need for the choke.

What condition do your fuel lines look in?
Sometimes they break down and clog up the fuel feed to the float bowl with bits of rubber.

I had this problem when i put mine is a couple of weeks ago, although it could be a different thing,
I found that if I leave it with choke on for 5 mins on fast idle then it would run with choke, it's not exactly cold but not even as much as a cough without the choke when I first get it out of the garage.

If I have read this right, your engine won't start or run when cold without choke. Surely this is to be expected?

It's turns out that aluninium casting of the main body of the carb was cracked inside the float bowl. No idea if this was the problem but it didn't look good so I managed to source another carb. Fires up fine now. Just not exactly sure how to set the Fueling! Cheers for the advice.

I had mine in bits as it was leaking it turned out that the brass choke thing was cracked. I replaced this and it no longer leaks but when the engine is cold it will not run for longer than 5 seconds after lots of turning over.
Obviusly the choke is for when it's cold but it never needed the choke at these temps or colder. I have noticed that the spring seems a bit loose on the choke though I will sort that.

for a basic get you running tune. run the mixture screw all the way in and then back out 2.5 turns. should be good enough for starting it up.
