Just a quick one chaps, having a bit of a brain fart and haven't done this for years.

I've just swapped me CW&P so just about to re-shim the diff and can't remeber the numbers properly.

I've got a 20 thou gap, does that mean i need 12 thou worth of shims in there, or do i need 20 thou worth of shims?

I'm running a quaiffe ATB if that makes any difference?

Cheers :)

isnt it your 20 thou gap , plus whatever preload you need ,which depends on what type of bearings you have ?

i have no idea chap, my haynes is really old and just says rod change gearboxes are new fangled things so i'm a bit dubious to trust it.

I'm running pot joints and bearing wise i didn't realise there was more than one type :s mine have thrust face or something written on them?

I give it a 1 thou pre load, so with a 20 thou gap Id fit 21 thou of shims

I seriously doubt it!

Don't forget the gasket !

20 thou, plus 1 thou preload, minus compressed gasket thickness = shim thickness.

Metric is for people who can't do fractions.

Surely if you preload it should be minus 1 thou, not plus..

No, plus. Minus 1 thou would take load off

I seriously doubt it!

Also, measure the gasket as they are not at all the same thickness as what the Haynes manual states.

Mine gets in the way a bit, but only when it is up. If it is down it does not cause a problem.
