Is there much of a difference between turbo pistons and normal pistons?

I have done one on google but havent really found what i was looking for i suppose i should be more specific. What i should be asking is there a way in which you can convert normal pistons into turbo ones?

Mate, half of the fun of building minis is being different and finding stuff out for yourself.

Use the search function and have a look
And come to your own conclusion.

Being spoon fed stuff isn't good!!

Or do a search, discover that the turbo pistons are bloody strong and good for a shit load of boost as opposed to the standard ones which would only be of use in the most conservative of engine builds.

Try searching 'pistons' in the box above.

In the 13's at last!.. Just

i searched this the other night but couldnt find evidence of anyone running standard na pistons. has anyone who has run them in a fi engine and what the outcome power/boost wise was before they failed?

cheers, dan

Why are you hellbent on using +30thou pistons did not get the answer you wanted in that thread
an if you have tryed all the suppliers and still have not got a set does that not tell you something?

To answer one part of the questions posed, I used standard MG Midget pistons in my first turbo build. They ran 10 psi without the benefit of an intercooler or Megajolt and, very briefly, survived 20psi+.

I did not like to push my luck any further and have used MT pistons since, all of which seem to stand up pretty well, especially as they have all been used before I got them, as had the Midget ones.

what compression ratio did you run with the midget pistons? i am hoping to get my first turbo build mot'd this week, then get it off to the rollers to set it up properly. i run a compression ratio of aprox 9.25:1, megajolt, cossie intercooler. im hoping to safely run 10psi of boost until i get my next engine built. if the fueling and iginition is set properly i cant see any problems with this setup? cheers, dan

we ran 25psi+ with about 9.3:1 on the upside down skip.

I did not measure accurately, but guessed it was around 8.9:1.
You should be OK at 10psi as long as you dont hold it flat out for a long period - the heat builds up and the Midget pistons are not ideal.

Isn't Nick using std 21253's at silly power?

I think as long as your not turboing an old dog of an engine and not after too much power you will be ok.

If you are building an engine from scratch just stick the known solution (cast omegas) rather then overcomplicating it for shits and giggles.
