Easier said than done, I currently work as a web application developer, and its fucking dull. generic web design would be better, but its not easy to get started on your own, and I cant find any companies who want to give me a job.

Bit of a personal question but what qualifications have you got? Have you considered further education (maybe part time?) to get more qualified and then you can get as you say a career not just a "job".
