Stainless is corrosion resistant, but work hardens which can lead to failure, so should not be used on any stressed or safety critical joint, I.e. Suspension, brakes.

On a side note (for Tom this is really), what is your opinion on stainless wheel nuts?
I got a set with my SC rims and didn't ever give it a thought, I assumed they would be fine to use?

I fitted smiffy's bits stainless bolts throughout incl. subframes but the cars not on the road yet are you saying that they could be dangerous?

Patina=old and knackered and won't clean up

I've run my car App 2000 miles with stainless bolts in the sub-frames, no problems so far, on saying that not right keen on them they don't seem to tighten up all that good, even when you use a lot of force they seem to lock up before they are really tight..

Edit. I think that is what Tom means..

Steve A, I believe Tom is saying they are dangerous, there was a thread on the use of stainless steel bolts being used to hold split rims together, if you can find that it may be helpful for you!

its the type of joint that you have to consider for stainless. alot of suspension components are held in shear. id definatly be choosing HT plated over stainless.
simple bolt though the heel board could go stainless, but whos going to see them anyway! if you worried about them going nasty just be liberal with copper slip

Basically if it is stainless in tension, in a low stress application, and will not see fatigue cycles, then it "probably" will be OK.

If it is in shear then I would not use stainless personally.

The only 2 places I wouldnt use stainless bolts are the joint between the bottom to and tie bar and front brake callipers. I used ss everywhere else

I seriously doubt it!

Am sure I was told that when people IVA cars or maybe even MOT them, they will/should fail if fitted with stainless bolts with anything to do with the brakes and possible suspension?

It all depends on using the correct grade of bolt (the A number) this Pdf explains in some detail.

http://www.bssa.org.uk/cms/File/Microsoft%...0ISO%203506.pdf

Looking at a hardness comparison chart A1 is just equiv to 8.8 or S grade
A2 10.9 or V/X grade
A4 12.9 or W grade

if you find those nuts and bolts then its goof but if you want to buy fine quality nuts and bolts then try Asian or middle east countries because they serve best things in cheap price. for example you can get your stuff by filling this simple form at here http://www.pankajinternational.com/enquiry-form
