Good question. I'd fit them but if they're really needed or not if you constantly keep them greased up....??

Mine gets in the way a bit, but only when it is up. If it is down it does not cause a problem.

You can buy those rubber seals, I've just bought some for the radius arms, there the same seals as the front upper arms, Mini spares is where you will get them 74 pence each..

You probably don't need to use them, It's a personal choice, either keep dirt and grit away or take a chance of getting dirt and grit into the bearings etc...I guess as long as they are kept greased up you will be a bit safer.

A bodge but since it's just for the track:
Can't you cut one open, then peal it over the shaft and hold it with a wide tie-wrap or hose clamp?

I threw mine in the bin thinking my polyflex kit would come with them.

I had to raid past 3 days worth of food and cat crap to get them back. Found them tho.

There easy to put on if you pull the rubber seal right on to the casting, the one at the shaft entry end, and when the shaft is in you just slide the rubber seal back into place, job done..

PS.. They keep the grease in, and the dirt out..
