Hi all - Looking for some help as I can't get my head around my rev counter wiring!

Its a more or less standard 998... Loom was built DIY but is largely Mini style.

I tried to hook up a smiths negative earth revcounter and it kind of worked, just was a bit mad, mis reading and bouncing all over the place.

I went to check my wiring but n the process of doing that I'm even more confused so just looking for some clarification please !

So coil side I have this:

I can't find "1" (w) marked in any wiring diagrams which got me a bit confused. It and "2" (b/w) go to the distributor, if I disconnect either it wont run, if I put a bulb between "2" and ground then it flashes, but cuts out the engine.

"3" is my tach feed, which was connected to "2"

Tach Side

"6" is the other side of "3" bullet connector (?), "5" is my + feed, which comes from ign/+on the coil

"4" is ground.

Also there was this "thingy" bolted on the coil - Do I need to connect it some where?

Maybe the tach is just shafted?

Please let me know your thoughts :)

Electronic ignition dizzy from a metro with a points only rev counter will do that.

What sort of Smiths tach is it ?

Metric is for people who can't do fractions.

Can you tell if its a Metro dizzy?

Alex -

I'm afraid I don't have a good pic, think it was an MGB or something

black box on side of dizzy means its electronic type. You need an RVC type tacho which yours does appear to be so it may well be buggered. RVI tacho's only work with points systems. Also found this which may be of use http://www.gomog.com/allmorgan/smithsclassic.html

My Smiths tach goes to negative on the coil - not positive

I seriously doubt it!

So the Tach should work with that dizzy then? It does appear to have RCV written on it. *frown*

Found this other pic which I guess will confirm its a metro dizzy. I thought it looked different from all the other dizzy I'd seen on my old minis.

Thank you for the advice I appreciate it.

Not sure what to do now! These stupid gauges have been so much more hassle & expense then they where worth! *angry*

At least if I switch to mega jolt it should work?

Do I need the wee black "thingy"?

Pauls got a point. Having just re-read the whole thing again it appears you have a few things about face.
The 'kick' wire needs to be on the neg side of the coil. That should be the only wire from the coil to the tach. You need a + and - and the lights feed at the tach and the kick wire from the coil. Should be fairly simple. Either that or ask someone with a 'points' car to test it for you. The black'thingy' is a supressor for the radio to stop interferance with the engine running. This a like a whistling or high pitch buzz the changes as you rev the engine. if it don't whistle then you don't need it.

I'm sure that the terminal (2) is the -ve that's where the tach (3) was fed from.

Maybe I'll take the tach off and re wire it with a direct feed from the battery and see if that helps. Maybe I got something else wrong in my loom :(

Thanks for the info on the suppressor. I don't have a radio so I can loose it :)

That is a RVC type rev counter as fitted to a 72-74 MGB and should be wired to the negative side of the coil.

The earlier type of impulse sensing (RVI) rev counter was wired to the positive side of the coil.

I'm not sure if that's much help as you seem to have it correct.
