I've managed to snap one of my ARP bolts, first question is does anyone have a spare knocking about as I would prefer not to spend £112 on a full set just to use one bolt.

I assume it has been snapped while fitting? If so, how?

yes while fitting. torquing it up and the torque wrench wasnt clicking so continued to tighten and then it broke. all the others torqued up just fine.

OR What are peoples opinions on buying a single standard bolt for around 4 quid to replace it? or perhaps 2 standard bolts to replace the 2 bolts on one rod. could buy 2 standard and have them both in one rod BUT, the whole bottom end is as strong as the weakest link, if you do this treat the whole lot as if it had no arp rod bolts as this one rod would become the weakest line just how strong the std bolts are is another question, it seems ( and same for my self) most people fit them because its too cheap to refuse ( centre main strap is another for instance ) Yes i moved to the darkside |

Well it is slightly different if you've tourqued it to 3,000,000,000 ft/lbs.

If the torque wrench wasn't working, how many of the others have been overtightened ???

There's nothing wrong with the torque wrench it's pefectly decent! It wasn't clicking because the bolt was obviously twisting and not tightening, the bolt is at fault not the wrench.

Could it have been overtightened in the past? Do you know who built the engine? On 7th Oct, 2010 5haneJ said:

With a failure like this (providing it was torqued properly as op states) are these any better than the original rover items? I was going to use arp on my next build, though i usually use second hand rover ones with no problems at all.... |

Until I joined this forum I ALWAYS re-used rod bolts and never had a failure.

I'd send the faulty bolt to ARP to examine. On 13th Jul, 2012 Ben H said:

I had a moment a few years ago where I over tightened a rod bolt.

I have had this with standard rod studs. The odd stud would start to neck and thus not torque and my torque wrenches are calibrated. Own the day

what did you torque them to? 35ft lbs. I now have a new set of bolts and ARP are sending me a strech gauge on loan to fit them next week. They were unable to offer any sort of support/discount on replacing the bolts as they have no factual figures to backup my claim such as bolt length which is really the only thing they can go on. For all they know I could have torqued them to 100ft lbs, there is just no way of telling. |

They have 3 sets of stretch gauges for loan, all FOC unless you try keeping them and they'll fine you £110. |
