I've managed to snap one of my ARP bolts, first question is does anyone have a spare knocking about as I would prefer not to spend £112 on a full set just to use one bolt.

OR

What are peoples opinions on buying a single standard bolt for around 4 quid to replace it? or perhaps 2 standard bolts to replace the 2 bolts on one rod.

I assume it has been snapped while fitting? If so, how?

I reckon arp could replace it if deemed faulty.

In the 13's at last!.. Just

yes while fitting. torquing it up and the torque wrench wasnt clicking so continued to tighten and then it broke. all the others torqued up just fine.

i will contact ARP in the morning.

could buy 2 standard and have them both in one rod BUT, the whole bottom end is as strong as the weakest link, if you do this treat the whole lot as if it had no arp rod bolts as this one rod would become the weakest line

just how strong the std bolts are is another question, it seems ( and same for my self) most people fit them because its too cheap to refuse ( centre main strap is another for instance )

Yes i moved to the darkside *happy*

Well it is slightly different if you've tourqued it to 3,000,000,000 ft/lbs.

Still worth a call to ARP to see if you can get one supplied.

As Brett says, where are you looking. Mine were around £70.

If the torque wrench wasn't working, how many of the others have been overtightened ???

I would replace everything (everything expensive failure potential) you have tightened with that torque wrench and bin it and get a decent one.

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

There's nothing wrong with the torque wrench it's pefectly decent! It wasn't clicking because the bolt was obviously twisting and not tightening, the bolt is at fault not the wrench.

Naturally I have 3 torque wrenches and all are giving the same readings for the other bolts.

Could it have been overtightened in the past? Do you know who built the engine?

With a failure like this (providing it was torqued properly as op states) are these any better than the original rover items? I was going to use arp on my next build, though i usually use second hand rover ones with no problems at all....

Anyone who has tried to break a con-rod bolt a high RPM, newer saves money at them again.
I was lucky. I could reuse cylinder head, cam and final drive.

If i have more toys than you when i die, I WIN

Until I joined this forum I ALWAYS re-used rod bolts and never had a failure.

Now I,m a bit paranoid and have used new bolts and the last re-build I used the ARP ones.

I'd send the faulty bolt to ARP to examine.

I had a moment a few years ago where I over tightened a rod bolt.
It ruined a lovely set of rods as it split the metal down the side of the hole.

Don't drink and build engines!

It was yes.

I am in contact with ARP via email, all they have suggested so far is to replace the whole set,

Use a stretch gauge rather than a torque wrench!

I have had this with standard rod studs. The odd stud would start to neck and thus not torque and my torque wrenches are calibrated.

35ft lbs.

I now have a new set of bolts and ARP are sending me a strech gauge on loan to fit them next week.

They were unable to offer any sort of support/discount on replacing the bolts as they have no factual figures to backup my claim such as bolt length which is really the only thing they can go on. For all they know I could have torqued them to 100ft lbs, there is just no way of telling.

They have 3 sets of stretch gauges for loan, all FOC unless you try keeping them and they'll fine you £110.

ive had a brand new ARP head stud break on my Mini years ago.

All torqued same, just one sheared just at the block/head interface when torquing. Luckily I only needed 9 studs out of the 11 stud set
