What do people use to treat surface rust?

Also what is best for painting the underneath of the car? Im guessing just 2k pack will chip too much, do most etch prime, stonechip then 2k over top

Thanks

I'm etching, seam sealer and stone chip under mine. Then it will be getting colour over the top of that.

Aerosol stonechip is shite, the reason being it has to be so watery to be able to be sprayed out of an aerosol can that it is not thick enough to get decent build on a panel. You need a proper underseal/Shutz gun and compressor to do it right.

I've got this stuff:

Rod S linked to it and it seemed good value. Ask me next week if it's any good...

i used the stone chip out of an aerosol on a couple of sill repairs on my old astra and the stuff just peeled off after a couple of months.

one day boost will be mine!

Stonechip's too heavy. :)

A good few coats of 2K should be fine if its just a weekend toy, for a daily I would stone chip though.

For rust I usually grind it back as far as I can with a knotted brsuh on the grinder then use Kurust. If its heavily pitted, cut it out.

Andy, if you need to borrow a gun you can, i was thinking you might be better with a 1ltr of etch rather than aerosols ???

Mayo, 2k unerneath would be fine on its own so long as its got a good ground (etch ) coat first.
Presuming thats the look your after

yep etch prime then seal all seams allow to dry i have used various materials depends what we have in at work. Wurth sks, upol raptor (hard stuff *happy* ) etc. Then i paint in 2k body paint sometimes with a rubberiser addative. I do prefer body colour underside looks tidy and i find easier to clean

Edit should have said prep inbetween materials and sometimes i surface prime dodgy/pitted areas i want smoother.

Cheers Rick. I've got the etch and thinners already. A reasonable gun is waiting for me at the post office. The stone chip goes on with a gun, got that too *smiley* I'll be stealing Mike race's compressor at the weekend. May even give it back at some point *evil*

Use a waterbased stonechip rather than a solvent as solvent base stays soft and the colour coat cracks

I seriously doubt it!

The wurth sks i use is water based and the upol raptor is a 2 pack product i think it is designed for truck beds or something but i like the texture and toughness.

I've just stonechipped the inside of a wing using the type that you spray from a gun and I was impressed with the results, it gave a nice even finish and looks like it should be very resilient. I had no problems painting over it, but I was using cellulose.

A little OT, but does everyone here seem to be using 2K at home? I thought it needed to be sprayed with an air fed mask supplied by a separate compressor and be sprayed in a place with a decent extraction system?
