Threads are measured on the nominal diameter of the threaded part, NOT the spanner size (apart from very old Whitworth shite, but don't worry about that).

On a mini there are the following common sizes

1/4" thread - 7/16" spanner (e.g. gearbox to block bolts)
5/16" thread - 1/2" spanner (used in lots of places)
3/8" thread - 9/16" spanner (e.g clutch slave cyl bolts)
7/16" thread - 11/16" spanner (e.g. ball joint nuts)
1/2" thread - 3/4" spanner (e.g. radius arm nuts)

also if your stuck for a nut for locking the rack rod end an old mini wheel nut will fit *wink*

Namrick used to do a mixed selection pack of UNF sizes, with plain and nyloc nuts, plain and spring washers, all plated. If they still do then it is well worth buying.
