Im still collecting parts for my gearbox, although I've only got to buy the diff now. I've just bought some straight cut drops off eBay, however I don't know of they'll fit my spec or not.

The gearbox I have is a close ratio box, gearbox number: 22G1832, which I believe is a close ratio first motion shaft and laygear.
The drops I bought stated this in the description - Classic Mini Cooper S 1:1 Drop Gear Set Will fit Cooper S crank (Not later A+).
I will be using the metro crank for my turbo engine, so will these drops fit the gearbox and be okay with that crank?

Also, I've been reading other threads about final drives. I can't decide what one would be best for what I'm going for. I want something that picks up quite fast but doesn't rev out at 60. I bought a 3.44 but would I be better off with a 3.2 or 3.1?

Really long question but thanks in advance whoever gets back to me.

Go with at least a 3.2 or 3.1. 3.44 and you wont see much benefit from the turbo as you need to load the engine up to get the turbo spooling. As for the drop gears the early idlers had a smaller shaft, I believe you can covert the transfer box to the smaller early type. Id double check this mind as its only from memory.

3.44 is the lowest i would go on the road make for a lively drive without screaming its tits off but is a little slow on the motorway
i love my 3.2 with the sccr box,

my last turbo motor was a 3.1 on a standard helibox and was fairly polite on the motorway but first gear felt a little pointless

Yes i moved to the darkside *happy*

I've got a 3.1 and 12's (SCCR Clubman gearset) on my clubby and I think its a fraction too tall. I would have preferred a 3.2.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

I have a 3.2 to go in my box. s/c box with abingdon ratios and 10s. looked the best compromise on guessworks ratio calculator

I've just changed from a 3.1 with ST SC box and 13" wheels to a 3.44 with Clubman evo box and 12" wheels.

I've not driven it yet, so can't comment on the difference, but the main goal is to be able to use 4th on the strip.

It's a toy, so I'm really not fussed about how practical it is on the motorway.

In the 13's at last!.. Just

It's only about 500rpm difference between 3.1 and 3.44 FD at 70mph, so I went for 3.44. Better ratios for just about everything except motorway, and with straight cut drops, I'm not using motorways much! As with a lot of others, it's not a daily driver.

Thanks for clearing that up! It's just hard to choose that's all, I'm looking for it to be pretty nippy round town but able to handle the odd motorway journey for shows etc.

Anybody know about the drops with the current box I have?

I've got a 3.44 and a T3 turbo on a 1380cc and I'm on full boost just over 4k.

I have to say it's a little annoying on the motorway sitting at 70 so I stick at 60 which can still get on your tits a bit.

However I also use the car on track and the pickup is absolutly amazing and I've yet to top it out in 4th full tilt on track.

I now have a set of earplugs for long journeys!
