Is the top ring on all factory pistons the same,so I could fit turbo pistons and rods into a n/a mg block without worrying about slight wear in the bores

I'm very sure - looking at a turbo piston - that the ring lands are lower on the 'turbo' piston than the nat-asp one. Hence, the bottom oiller ring will be the problem one... On 17th Nov, 2014 Tom Fenton said:

after strip down yes indeed about .040 lower on a std turbo piston
