That's crazy!! I've paid a lot of money for insurance in the past and always regretted it.

My leon was pretty expensive to insure as i was only 20 when the policy started and it's a group17 i think...

Wish i'd wait a few month until i was 21, the insurance would have fallen by about £500.

You've got to ask yourself... is it worth it?

Insurance are bastards. But unfortunately a neccessary evil.

One thing I will say is get yourself on the ladder as early as you can, I went down the "named driver" route with a policy in my mums name for a few years and all that happens is you end up getting screwed when you DO start insuring in your own name. When I was 17 I was quoted over a grand for a Mini Clubman Estate (standard) TPFT. When I was 23, and bought my own insurance for the first time, it cost me £1180 TPFT on my car at the time. OK it was group 16, but they get you either way, as I am sure a lot of people by 23 or so will have moved onto hot hatches or whatever as well as their Minis, and hence the insurance groups go up.

Its well worth it is insurance, to know that if you slam your £3000 turbo mini into a brand new jaguar or rolls royce on a forecourt, you dont have to pay!

You seem to have misunderstood what i meant.

Obviously insurance isn't optional, I didn't mean is it worth paying it when you *might* get away with it.

My point was- although it really sucks, why don't you drive round in something a little tamer for a year until the insurance companies won't ride you dry.

I don't know what your driving history is like, but AlexB had a golf gti at 18 and insured it for quite sensible money. I had my gti at 19 and it only(!) cost £800. Could be worth getting a shitter for a year to smoke around in.
