I talked to a guy in Florida this weekend who has me seriously considering doing my own fuel injection setup. What he did was buy all of the bits and cobble it all together himself. He's using an intercooler, EFI box (some Australian company's), Honda throttle body, and two fuel injectors plumbed straight into the intake manifold. Here's a piccie:

He claims that he has great fuel economy (because he can fully map his usage), none of the siamesed port issues (though I find that hard to believe), and loads of power. He said he raced a motorcycle on Saturday, and the bike only pulled on him because he missed a gear change. THAT's impressive!

I'm considering following his plan. What are your thoughts?

My thought are it'll end in tears!!!
It's a good learning experience however!

How does he know about no charge-stealing? Only way you know is with a couple of lambda gauges. Getting sufficient fuel in with two injectors alone is tricky and you can make an edjucated guess as to his real power output from that instalation- if you did decide to start fabb'ing something, make it a 4-injector manifold.

Thanks, Dave. He said something about the jets firing with every pulse, but I'm not sure I got that right (a LOT of info in one call, and my head was spinning). I'll try to ask him again on the details of when the injectors fire.

On the dizzy, I've asked him about whether or not he is using it, and if he is, what does the MSD box do for him...

He highly recommends this setup (it IS lovely!), but is pressuring me to cut the bulkhead to install the turbo. It's a 1967 Coope 's' shell, for criminy sake! It would break my heart! But after looking at a local guy's clubbie, I realized that I've got precious little space behind the engine to run the high pressure intake lines, as well as two runs of exhaust tubing (from the manifold to the turbo- which is planned to be over the clutch- and then back down to the middle for exhausting).

Mirage setup????

Metal can ALWAYS be put back - but it's a lot of work. I wouln't be cutting an 'S' shell personally - NOT when you can buy something that doesn't need any surgery!

Incidentally, when I first had the Weber Alpha injection on my mini, it was a flying machine - really, really quick...

I recall it ran a 14.7 at the 2000 Showdown on road tyres (other guys were on slicks).
That was the best injection setup i've ever experienced on my mini (when it worked). Good economy, etc. This fired the injector at the right time, but couldn't move it dynamically wrt RPM.
What I now know however, I wouldn't spend too much money on an injection system that I can't move the injection point on (ie any of them).

We might have something available (an injection sequencer that uses the output from the ECU and merely puts the spark in the right place) at some point that'll sort the injection problems out however, so i'd say crack on and make a start - and maybe a solution will be available when you're nearly done.

I don't like the curve to the intake mind... You want this going into a plenum box where the charge can distibute evenly.

from what i gather the injectors are firing into each port, as opposed to a wet manifold/plenum(or in this case pipe) setup.

Dumb Question, but where's the intake and filter?
I can't see any elephant trunk/equivalent, and I don't see a lot of room to put it in?

Good call, NeXTGen! I have no idea where that intake filter is! :)

evolution, I believe that it is, indeed, a wet manifold situation. We talked about it a bit, and he believes that if he fires only one per side, you'd end up lean. Makes sense.

I asked about his power, and he dynoed at about 110bhp and then his clutch went south. Hasn't been on the dyno again, but believes he's running about 150bhp. And that's with an un-modified head! He's pushing a bar of boost on a standard head (thank you, intercooler!). I'm looking forward to getting to the point that I can start working on putting the bits together!

He did explain that he's using an optical trigger in the dizzy, and the MSD is a coil. He gave me all the info I believe I'll need, and I do believe fuel injecting will be the way to go. I'll keep you all abreast of progress. Wish me luck!
