Yesterday i filled up the Va-stead at an asda petrol station, the car now is a gutless peice of poo now, a little anoyed as i have a full tank of this stuff now, i forgot how bad asda's fuel is compared to sainsburys.

Is there anything i could add to the fuel to possibly run nicely again? I dont really want to drain 45 liters of fuel and put good stuff back in.

Asda fuel made my 1275 stage one run like a 3 legged donkey, that's how bad the stuff is.
It's probably stale piss with thinners in it.

Get what you pay for.

I regularly notice a difference with supermarket diesel compared to any regular branded diesel. Its as much as 4mpg difference.

I,m not sure how much of this comment is subjective, because fuel is distributed in a way that many fuel stations are receiving the same fuel, even though it is retailed under different names.

For instance, a local distributor has started to expand its chain of outlets under the Harvest Energy brand name, which a virtual unknown, but who supply all the fuel for Shell in Scotland.

I do doubt that any retailer whose fuel consistently falls short of specification would not fall foul of Trading Standards.

i try not to use supermarket fuel for the same reason.

As for distribution, agreed it is supplied by the big companies however up here supermarket fuel is distributed from clydebank whereas the big boys supply there own stations from grangemouth. Make of that as you will

Just because it comes from the same refinery does not mean that it is sthe same at Asda, that it is at Shell.

Shell Stanlow was sold to the Indians, and is now run by Essar. They have been using a different crude as well, than what Shell used. The base fuel is the same throughout, but the addative package is specific to the retailer.

I can tell where I've filled mine up and I never use supermarkets. If I use the local murco station it runs shit, if I use bp it runs a bit better and if I use shell it runs better still, and shells the cheapest as well. Win win really.

one day boost will be mine!

I found Sainsburys fuel is pretty good and relatively cheap. I think (and don't quote me on this) that BP supply the fuel for sainsburys.

the shell here is about 5p more expensive vs supermarkets but over a full tank and the slighly better milage probably works out cheaper,

sainsburys may well use esso fuel but it will not be what you buy at the pumps at an esso station

Can't say I've ever noticed in the van, but in the mini I religiously used v-power.

my 1380 n/a i always use high octane, runs like turd on normal stuff. its not fussy which brand it has although v power makes it run a touch smoother. my daily e36 328 bmw i always run v power in that if i can, if i cant get it il use another high octane brand, and i certainly notice the difference in terms of mpg's and general running between them, v power giving me a couple more mpg's and being more responsive

North Yorkshire

I have done over 20,000 miles in two common rail diesel engined cars over the last year, and nearly all the miles on exactly the same journey between North Wales and Yorkshire. I have used mainly either Asda or Shell diesel, and sometimes Tesco. The only thing that changed the MPG significantly was ambient temperature or high winds. Two weeks ago I acheived 43 mpg average with the cruise control set to 60 mph on my journey to Yorkshire, and last week on the same journey at the same speed I got 50 mpg average. The only difference was miserable wet cold weather on the first trip and dry warm sunny weather on the second. This pattern in change of MPG occurs with every change of weather I experience, with cold wet weather dropping mpg and warmer weather lifting it, and it occurs regardless of brands of diesel. Based on my experience, trying to assess the different between Brand X and Brand Y on the open road is next to impossible.

I keep meaning to investigate why the changing weather affects MPG so much on a common rail diesel engine. I have seen a suggestion that the additive put in diesel in the winter to stop it waxing could change the characteristics of the fuel, but I have seen my MPG swing with the same tank of fuel in winter, so it doesn't stack up for me. I believe that common rail diesels produce less waste energy as heat (hence why they take so long to warm up) and I wonder if they then get over cooled during cold weather, either by heat loss from the block or the cold air entering the engine, and this reduces the engines efficiency?

Denser air so more fuel required?

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

how relevant that is to the thread i have no idea lol
mine likes a steaming engine and cold air, then i get more mid range torque and better mpg
colder and damp air makes as much difference as higher octane fuel in mine

I always use Tesco petrol, 95 in the daily drive and 99 in the Mini.

Momentum 99 is a great fuel and has been independantly tested in numerous high performance cars
