does any one know if there is a difference between the driveshafts off a drum and the driveshafts off a disc set up eg drum being shorter cheers

No they are the same. The only difference is the outer cv joint is larger on the disc setup, but the splines are the same so the cv's are interchangeable between the shafts (which are the same)

so can you think of why my drive shafts are too short then. measured my other mini from certain pionts and they are both he same part from the drive shafts, i am at a loss

How long is a piece of string....

What ride height is your mini? What hubs are you using? What bottom arms are you using? What CV joints? Pot Joints or Hardy Spicer joints?

Give us a bit more of a clue......

my ride hight is so the drive shafts are just about level, i have a subframe off a 77 with all the gear on it that came with it, and the hubs are off a late 84 mini, phoned people from mini sport and they said to put the drive shaft onto the pot first then put the pot joint into the gear box, what difference would this make

Are you saying the balls on the pot-joint spiders don't even reach the pot itself? or that they don't go all the way in?

If you're trying to make it pefect, don't bother.
The balls usually contact the grooves something like 1/3rd of the way into the pot itself (ie - near the open end).

If yours is somehting like, just get em in and get it done!

There were NO shorter shafts ever used on any mini that use the pot-joint spider spline. If it has the pot-joint end on the shafts, they can only be off a mini (or off a vehicle like a metro/allegro that had even longer shafts - NOT shorter ones).

im saying that they only just sit on the outside of the pot joint, guna go measure them up now as the lenght has been put on here so i can go see if they are the right lenght

ok right i measured the drive shaft and they are the right lenght, which is good as i dont have to look for other ones. what would be the next thing if i put 1.5 degree bottom arms on would this make a large difference to how far the joint sat in the pot, also how would this affect the handling of the car.

1.5 neg arms make bottom of wheels out further so make it worse

Sorry for doubting what you were saying - that deffo isn't right!!!

Is this the longer or shorter shaft? Is your subframe & eng mounts totally standard? Hubs?

engine mounts and subframe standard, this is the one thats still in the pot joint its the shorter drive shaft, only thing i can think would be suspect would be the hubs but they are off a mini cause of the ball joints, tell tale sign between metro and mini eg mini ball joints screw on to the hub. thinking of using metro drive shafts as they are 40 mil longer so might just fit in there. this one seems like a new thing to me as no one knows why this is happening

I thought very early metro hubs had mini type joints but differant geometry

early metro ball joints had a different taper, that's all.

are these the shafts that went with these pot's then, or have you mixed/matched them?

ye the ones that came with the original car, different pots as they came off the metro with the engine but they are all the same arnt they none are longer then others

well there is a difference actually - some are a smaller dia than others - but no idea about a length difference.
