just been checking things over and i've noticed my air filter is fairly dirty!

is there an alternative to air filter cleaner, something cheap that does the same job???

The reason you need to be careful is that any petroleum-based cleaners will rot away the cotton in between the gauze that does the filtering proper. So the proper stuff is water based as it will not rot the cotton.
You could try something water based like Janitol but TBH I would get the proper stuff, the cleaning kit is cheaper than having to buy a new filter if you make a bollocks of the old one......
