I use step drills all the time for metal, mostly for sheet ally, but they will do steel, just make sure you keep stuff cool, iVE USED A 30-40MM one in a lathe to make my inlet runners from solid bar!

We used step drill bits for smaller swages and starrett holes saws for larger swaged holes.

I used a step drill for routing cable through my shell and door for fitting central locking.

I have the bosh hole saws already, but due to having nothing to clamp the drill down with you get that slight wobble from where they clip into place, i did my subby and cross member with them, though i will be taking out the cross member and re-doing it with alot more holes and swags to keep it strong.

I've just picked up a set of cone drills from B&Q tradepoint; they don't have the steps in them so are a contunuously variable. Great for what i wanted but not so good if you want to keep everything to the same size |
