Now the weather is warming up I've been seeing people talk about swapping the stat for a sleeve, and although my mini isn't ready yet (but will be just for rallying), I've been wondering whether to put a stat or a sleeve in.

For competition everyone seems to go for a sleeve, but I can't always see why, as the whole point of a stat is it warms up the engine quicker to proper operating temp, and maintains the right temperature all the time. Personally I prefer having a stat with a couple of holes drilled in it which allows a little more flow (and bypass when cold), but still lets the stat work how it is supposed to, and provides back pressure in the block to get better heat conductivity.

All that is only my opinion, but want to see what the general consensus is on here! (Non turbo btw..!)

Start with an appropriate temperature stat and if you have problems move to a sleeve.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.
