some of you may recall last year I managed to crush my right hand when the jack broke while I was changing the wheel on my daily driver.

Lessons learnt you would think but I've just had a close call with the new car - this time the car moved slightly (handbrake on and in park) and the jack again collapsed. Buggered the sill, closed up the gap between the sill and door bottom, damaged the rear door and severely pissed me off. Thats all on top of the fact the rear tyre is fecked.

In short, I'm never going to use a standard jack again

I seriously doubt it!

The only time i use a standard jack is to prop something up thats light eg mini jack holding up a lightend front subby.

I would rather destroy my rim and tyre than use a standard jack.

Glad you are okay though

Perfectly ok to use such a jack in emergencies on level ground. You've just been unlucky. I've never had a problem using them.

Wil, I've never had issues in the past and would only use it as an emergency but now I'm starting to question how stable you can make the car at the roadside - particulalry if I was on the hard sholder and a truch comes past with the corresponding wind pressure.

This time was un-lucky; the first time was simply due to the load in the car I think

not my style Andy. All it would do is distract me from the important things in life and get me even more wound up. I'm best to deal with it my own way

I think the real problem is the weight of the car they are now expected to lift. My 205 weighing in at 950kg has what is basically an identical jack to my 1600(?)kg Audi.

Whilst I have and would again happily jack up the 205 with it, the Audi is a different matter.
My Shogun is best, it comes with a great big fuck off bottle jack.

Was this on an Audi? I know someone who broke 2 fingers using one of these jacks, it collapsed as he had his hand on the top of the wheel. That one failed because the threaded part was made of plastic and the threads pulled through. They are dangerous but sometimes there is little choice but to use one, who would carry a trolley jack with them all the time?

I would carry an axle stand or bottle jack, take up very little room but much safer.

Unless it is a rusty car and the jack attachment point is suspect, the supplied jack is OK as long as it is used as directed.I believe nearly all handbooks say handbrake on, in gear AND chock the wheel. As wil says, trying to use one on anything other than level ground is very iffy in any circumstance.

Not having a pop at you Rob, we all do similar things and its only in retrospect its is realised how potentially dangerous these are.

You have had to find out in painful and expensive ways-I feel for you.

car was in gear, with the handbrake on, on level ground; the only thing i didn't do was chock the wheels.

I usually stick the spare wheel under the car to act as a safety net but I hadn't even got that far in the proceedings as I'd only just got the offending wheel off the ground.

I think I'll carry chocks as I can get these stored away easily enough. Have thought about carying one of those folding axle stands as well but as I said, the car moved before i'd actually got it to a height I would have placed the stand anyway.
