Well I have been having issues with my E60 again. This is the second car I have ever baught from a main dealer. It has been eating front brakes that I posted in a previous topic. Anyhoo getting a bit off topic.

The fault has been traced to the wheels, as they are now used to dissapate the heat from the brakes. (The dealer had them re-furbed before I baught the car and the inside face had been painted). So they have ordered four new wheels!! they must be apporaching 1/2 the value of the car in the last 11 months in repairs.... So sometime the dealer warrenty is worth it. Well the BMW AUC is.

Back on track:
They have given me a new 328i. Nw this car is loaded with extra's but what an engine. The book says it hits 60 in 5.9 and I can beleive it. The car is one fast little sucker. On the motorway to work I was getting over 50mpg! combined is showing 42.

This is from a 2.0L petrol Turbo. (It feels it a 6 cyl lump!) Now is this the resurrection of the petrol engine in the main stream? They seem much cheaper than the Derv alternative and generally a lot less hassle, no DPF etc....Not that I'm in the market or finding 32K....

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

Personally I wouldn't buy a modern diesel anymore as there is just too much to go wrong.

That said on modern petrols there is plenty to go wrong I'm sure, and given how interlinked with everything the ecu is these days throwing it away in favour of a decent aftermarket one may not be as simple as it once was.

Keep the old bangers running is my mentality!

modern diesels are too bleeding edge, with too many "bodges" to keep emissions down while still providing the power people expect. EGR, DPF... blame the emissions standards. i can certainly see smaller forced induction petrol engines becoming more common, and hopefulyl itll spur on the take up of E85.

Well I have been impressed ESP with the auto box. And over 40mpg with all that power it's a very good combination.. Don't want my car back now!

The BMW engines are great, my dad has had 330i, 335d and now has the 4.0 v8 m3, they have all been brill all round, a freins from work has fairly new audi 2.0t, he says the mpg is shocking, no where near what the book states, no matter how you drive it.

it is almost ironic as some of the more powerful BMW diesels have a bit of a reputation for being a bit thursty.

Small petrol engines is where the development is at the moment, no good for towing though, they have the power, but lack the torque.

335d are top of the range diesel,3.0 twin turbo, 350bhp after re-map, 0-60 Is about 5.5secs, 13.0 - 1/4 mile, and 34mpg combined, and that's fairly spirited driving, can't grumble.

Well I'm falling in love with this engine, it's fantastic, no matter when you need it it has power. The 8 speed auto is brill. It's doing about 43 combined, and it's getting some boot. I just need to sell a kidney to keep it. The bugger has given me it until Wednesday.

So its a petrol thats giving 43mpg, thats bloody brilliant.

A good friend of mine works at honda but volvo service is in the same workshop and the deisel volvo d5's used to do 45+mpg but the new ones now struggle to get 35 but the emissions are down so volvo win the customer loose.

yep the average so far is about 43mpg, thats booting it around town and then a motorway drive to work. (I do 55 miles on the motorway each way everyday so I do norm get a higher end of the combined style)
SO for me its great, I realy dont want to give the car up.
