Hey guys

I know ball joints are pretty basic but i would like some help please *smiley*

I put two new ones on the hub and the first one swallowed quite a few shims, however after torquing and greasing it up one side of it is quite loose and the other side is stiff as hell i have taken it apart and tried loads of combinations of shims and also cleaned it up just incase there was some dirt one one side.

The bottom ball joint went together spot on straight away and is exactly as the youtube video shows it should be, i didnt lap them in so an wondering if the top ball joint has worn on one side and not the other - i have tried to move it about and parts of the ball have gone shiny

Just wondering if the top ball joint is buggered or not? I have a spare so if it is I can change it

Where can I get some more shims aswell because each of the ball joints took a full set of shims *oh well*

Cheers

Craig

the ball wears in a non spherical way - so with nut tightened with the knuckle in one position it will be loose, in another it might be binding. beware of cheap aftermarket ball joints. there is one seller of quality oem spec ball joint on ebay - i use these on my car over high mileage and they are spot on. cheers, dan

ive had problems where the round peace that sits on the spring in the hub doesnt fit in the hub correctly so id have a look at them

I bought the cheap ones from Minispares and they are shit IMO. I started trying to shim them and gave up as they are binding in one position and loose in another. I only bought them because they didn't have genuine in stock.

Lap them in, did you shim up the bottom ones without the spring? - you must, and then strip it down and refit the spring.
Read the Haynes manual and understand it before redoing them.
They are shimmed correctly when you cannot move them by hand but you can move them by putting a spanner over the shank of the balljoint to create a lever

I seriously doubt it!

It might have worn in this way then as this sounds like wheat I've got

It isn't the one with the spring but the other one taht just has the cap that sits in the hub

From what you said I may have put too many shims in them then, as the one that I thought was good is stiff but you can move it with your hand and the other one is loose as bollocks on 50% of it and tight as hell on the other 50% Might just replace it today when Im taking out some of the shims to fit

This is the video I followed, and his top ball joint looks to be the same as my bottom one (the one I think is okay):

Is this how its meant to be then?
