I've been getting distracted again from the turbo project.

MED appear to still have the 16v omegas going cheep and my thoughts are turning to the next project, my 1960 traveller.

The car is early although has had a few period mods in the past and is not original; the original 850 magic wand is long gone and now has a 998 with remote change as an example. I've always had the thought that I'd rebuilt it with a cooper spec as I wanted drive it and enjoy it and not just park it in a field and polish it to death.

I quite like the idea of an original looking car on the outside but something a little different but ultimately reversible under the bonnet.

what do you think?

Do it. You could use carbs if you wanted a period look.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

there are a few issues I'd need to think about; changing to neg earth and fitting an alternator for a start. The other issue is that I do not want to touch the original fuel tank (it is one of the early internal tanks). possibly ways round that though.

under an hour for an engine swap????I've managed to get an engine out in under an hour before working with one other person but not the replacement back in. Certainly not in a car I'd care about damaging paintwork etc

Do it!
I have a 63 van that i'm working on (long way to go yet) but am aiming for a similar look. Will be standard externally except cooper steel wheels. Inside will be the same and I even plan to keep the magic wand, but with 4 sync box. Under bonnet will be a 998 with efi, and to follow a turbo once I get my head around the megasquirt! I'm not going to cut any metal work though so would be able to put back standard easily.

not sure I'd go as far as the magic wand but I like the idea. The car as it stands needs some body work but not a great deal. I'm not wanting to make it a concours car and like the patina of an older original car so am going to re-fit most of the bits as they are - hopefully that will let me get it finished a bit quicker than the Turbo!

If i had the money i would do an original looking early estate with a bike engine in the front and rwd only thing to give it away would be the sound and tyres.
I would do it, if you did an 8v the cam covers look like there out of the 60's/70's so would look even more stock.

I do have a remote as well - so if the magic wand turns out to be really bad I can put than on instead :) I have never driven a mini with magic wand so don't know what to expect yet!!! I just didn't want to cut metal unless necessary. Think I will be going for the same Patina !

Edit - I had though about a bike engine (R1 FWD), but they seem extremely loud - to the point of having to wear ear defenders so that put me off.

A friend was planning to put a 1380 on a magic wand box, but after discussions with several people who know about big-power engines, the plan was canned.
Seems that if you boot it hard in 1st or 3rd gear, the lever rocks hard enough to knock it out of gear.

Metric is for people who can't do fractions.
