Helping a mate build his engine, and he's just joined although he's been reading for a while. Took some pictures on my phone and something just doesn't seem right....

The ring gap looks massive, its a +0.40 ring set.
Does the piston seem to be about the right size for the bore, theres no rings on it.
Craig should be along with some measurements in a sec (Scrap)

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

Your looking at 0.010" to 0.012" anything more is not going to cut it. ..may be the wrong ring pack

The pistons are 71.12mm measured with several different micrometers and calipers. The gap between the piston and bore is 0.12mm without the rings. I don't think I have the correct set of piston rings.

He bought the engine fresh in bits and the crank seems to have gone well, all +0.10 bearings and shims seem to be correct (haven't checked endfloat yet)
So why the ring pack isn't right we don't know!

Not sure Steve, the engine was bought as a lot so not much is known about it. They're 3 ring pistons and don't really have any markings. Theres one under the crown but i've forgotten what it was since earlier.

I would ditch those and get a set of omegas
Job done, all the power the engine will ever make is above thie pistons, iam sure it will end in tears if you fit those none descrip ones

Are they made in China. ?

It's only an N/A engine steve, nothing serious is being put through it. And he drives sensibly anyhow. If the day ever comes that it sees any boost pressure it'll be pulled apart for a piston change.

Where and how did you measure the pistons? What size is the bore? +40?

71.12 would be +20 and the rings look about the same.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

I measured the pistons about 10mm from the bottom of the skirt using a micrometer. I don't know the size of the bore I will find this out tomorrow.
