I am swapping cylinder heads on my mini with a donor motor I have. Mine is cracked. I have never done this before and am following the haynes manual. Is there anything I should do before I start fitting it on? Is there also something I should do that is not in the manual that should be done too?

Haynes has this one well covered. A few people have added their own little tweaks (like torquing up after a heat cycle), but they really aren't needed.

I do this on some cars Eg Rover v8's mainly alloy head and block motors just to be sure

Mini ill run it round from front middle out in a spirl then back around just to be sure

Looking at the photos of the damaged head, I'd say you were unlucky last time;

Do you have one of the ultimate engine steadies? I'm just wondering if the action of this on the thermostat housing studs was the cause of a weakness? alternatvily hydraulic action of any fluid in the head when the bolts were tightened?

in short, it would look like the issue revolved around the thermostat housing and nothing to do with the actual fitting of the head itself

Torquing the head nuts down, start at the centre stud and work your way out in a spiral

I didn't have one of those steadies. I did have to replace that side engine mount when I dropped that motor in the clubby. I pulled the head off the donor motor and took a few stuff my motor to get ready for the swap. Will pull my head off tomorrow and clean up and install the donor head on.
