As above has anybody carried out this modification? I want to remove the play between the yoke and the gearstick. I've had a search but can't find any info. I take it that I remove the ball from the gearstick then find a bearing the correct size and machine the yoke for it to fit in.

Any help appreciated cheers

Ron

Ron, the yokes are weak enough without removing more material , if you think you have too much free paly between the two parts maybe look to make a new ball but you are always gonig to suffer with slack due to the nature of the design, you could try fitting a spherical bearing but then the free paly would be moved to the stick in the bearing bore,

Ditto what Carl says about the yoke being weak, I smashed one on the DON at Castle Combe a few years ago and had to go searching the autojumble for a massively overpriced scrap old rod change to pillage a yoke out of.

I found out the hard way how weak the yoke was when I stripped down the unit. The only yoke I had isn't the best, that's why there is so much play. I will pull it apart and see if I can measure up for a new ball on the gearstick. If not I will have to sort out a new yoke!

how about replacing the ball with a threaded stub, and putting a rober on it and a nut at the bottom so you can compress the rubber so it expands to fill the yoke snugly.

There is loads of play in the housing bushes that is easilly corrected.

I found the rods wear too where they bear on the bushes.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

I'm going to pull it apart tommorrow and see what I can sort out. I have already fitted a brass bush in the front of the housing to remove the play. I'm just trying to make the shift feel abit more positive.

I finally got this sorted today! I managed to get a new yoke for the selector housing (cheers Eden) and fitted this today.

This has taken all the slop out of the gearstick. I have also fitted one of the Minispares bias spring that holds the gear lever in the 3rd/4th gear gate. It's spot on :)
