To condense many pages to a short answer: For mega rpm engines they might be helpful, but not everyone can agree. For turbo and relatively low rpm engines they are pointless. The problem is they have become, almost by myth, part of the standard specification for engines.

They generally don't need to to produce good power, but it depends on the Turbo used & cam etc |

Thank you as I was puzzling myself if I made the right decision in leaving off a center main strap - I cant really see it being an issue for myself now

I'm on your site at the moment phil having a read through as I'm gonna build a 998 turbo :) would bolts or studs and nuts be better for mains? |

I would always use the bolts with the hardened washers. There's no way you should be torqueing a bolt head directly against the main cap. |
