check the inline fuses on the bulkhead and have a look at the relays and connectors mounted on the passenger side bulkhead,

I cant seem to see any inline fuses, that's what I was looking for.

Does the fuel pump run? Sounds like a main fuse has blown. They are in the middle by the metal plate in the bulkhead.

Check the connectors to the relays as they often corrode. You can test whether you are getting power to and from the relays by proding at the back of the terminals with a multimeter. The fatter wire will be the supply to it and feed to the other side and the thinner wires the switch.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

I would start with the fuses. had a similar problem on an m reg cooper. the fuse terminals where corroded.

N reg will have 24 way blade fuse box, there are no inline fuses.

There is nothing special about the SPi electrics and any methodical diagnostics with a multi meter will set you on your way. The latest Haynes manual has all the details of the 24 way fuse box and the wiring diagram is pretty much the same as the early SPi. In simple terms the white live feed to the dash and ECU is not live when it should be.

I have an idea what the issue is, but I find it difficult to help you any more than I already have seeing as you'll be charging some one for work.

Use a multimeter and the latest haynes manual (if you weren't such a cheapskate you'd have the autodata) and you'll soon have it sorted.
