What are they like to do in situ, will I get away with leaving the downpipe on? Had a quick glance, but couldn't see a lot!

leaking from the bottom there, bloody big leak too. cleaned it off and started leaking straight away with cold oil. That was a new gasket obviously when I built the engine, done about 5 miles, sat in the unit for ages :/.

Sheffield South Yorkshire GB.

You can do them in situ, but will have to dismantle the hub, brakes, CV, drive shaft and pot joint, you will need a socket ratchet and a long extension..

Yeah they're not too bad...alot easier than taking the engine out!

Looking at where it is, have you got the O ring fitted?

O ring? Lol. I can't remember an o ring, but it was about 2 years ago when I built it. I looked on minispares and they do a genuine gasket for just over £2, but didn't spot an o ring. I'll have another look now. Thanks for all the help.

I don't remember an O ring either.. makes me wonder if thats why mine has decided to piss 1/2 a gallon of oil all over the garage floor all of a sudden.

Does anyone have pictures of this O ring and where it goes?

My leak is huge too, literally emptied itself of oil over a few months while being sat in the unit, not moved an inch. I've just had a look on minispares and can't seem to find the o ring?? Like above, any pics / links please?

I wonder if they are talking about the selector shaft.. which isn't where my leak is..

The O ring is behind the "ear" (bottom of photo) on that side.

It's where the spring/ball that controls the selector shaft lives, not the selector shaft seal itself.

It sits in a groove in the diff rear housing and the "ear" holds the spring/sleeve in. The majority of the side cover is sealed by the gasket but the "ear" is sealed on the O ring.

(edit, changed to spring/ball, not spring/sleeve that I originally said)

There you go...

They don't normally fall out but will be old/hard and wont seal unless renewed.

Worse still, a lot of non-genuine side cover gaskets are thicker than they should be so the cover won't even touch an old O-ring.

That's everything I need to know thank you!
I did notice when reversing it out the other day that it pops out of reverse. I can kill two birds with one stone and replace the spring and ball while the cover is off.
Thanks again.
