One for the WelshWizard probably, but anyone else help?

Got a new M60, but annoyingly when I close the screen, the bugger powers down. How do I change this so it just goes to 'sleep' and awakens next time i open it (instead of having to walk between meetings with my finger jammed between the screen and keyboard to stop it fully closing).

Also, how the hell do I turn off (permanently) that annoying windows tune after windows powers up. I used to remember stuff like this on Win95 but it's been that long since i've messed about with that kinda stuff I've forgotten what to do!

Cheers,
Dave

in control panel click on power options under one of the tabs there should be an option to say when I close my lid:

sorry didn't read all of question, in control panel again, select "Sound and audio devices" then click on the "sounds" tab scan down the list, highlight windows logon, then select the sound you want, or none for no sound

Wouldn't it be better to put it into standby when closing the lid which on a lap-top would be S3 standby where the machine effectively closes windows but relies on power (battery) to retain current windows session data?
This would mean that on re-opening the screen (& poss pressing the power button) that it would resume the windows session (booting in approx 5 to 10 seconds) and would minimise potential HDD damage whilst being carried between meetings.

Just my thoughts as I am aware that HDD are all too common in Notebook type PCs and any attempt to prolong its life is beneficial.

Fair enough.
Didn't mean to offend.
Just noticed the "How do I change this so it just goes to 'sleep' and awakens next time i open it" bit and felt it would be appropriate.

I don't know what i want to do...

All i want is for it to only turn off when i select 'shut down'!

Are you (GTM) suggesting that if it is left powered up, I could damage the HD say as I put it on my desk?
Never really thought of that. How likely is this to happen?

The vast majority of HDD failures occur through excess heat build up.
Some occur through shock (movement when switched on causing the HDD read/write head to hit the disk surface).
Remember that the head floats microns above the disk surface.
HDD in Notebook PCs tend to be more resilient to being moved than HDD found in desktop type PCs.
I always recommend to our users that they switch the machine off or at least put it into stand by or hibernate before moving it.
If they must move it whilst switched on be delicate with it.

Even robust Notebooks like the Panasonic Toughbook which has a gel wrapped shock absorbed HDD can be damaged. This unit is designed to withstand something like a 3 to 4G force.
Dropping it off the edge of a desk will more than likely generate a higher g.

All I'm saying is be careful with it.
I would recommend stand by when closing the lid but if it must be left on move it cautiously!

Hmmm - so what is 'standby' and 'hibernate' exactly then???

If one of these will fire my machine up within a few seconds (you described this above) that might be a better option given what a clumsy type I am?

standby, bascily shuts everything down, put keeps power to memory, so you can resume where you left off, it still uses battery, but very small amount. Hibernate is the same as standby, but it save the memory to hard disk, this takes slightly longer to resume, and does not use any battery. But it all depens what you want, fast speed, but shorter hard drive life? As your laptop is a compnay laptop, I would not be too worried about hard drive life, it is at the end of the personal choice

Agree with Jim entirely.
As you are only carrying it between rooms for meetings Standby would be the quickest option for resuming windows.
Horses for courses as is often said on here.
