quick question, can you here pinging just by reving the car? or does it have to be underload?

It can det/ping both under load and revving whilst stationary.

But if it's doing it while under load, you won't be able to replicate it by reving it without load.

the reason i ask if becouse i just got a new head and rebuilt turbo on. and yesterday i reved it a bit to around 4000k and heard some klinking noises and thought that might be detonation. as i have never heard it before i dont now exactly what it sounds like.

the cars is currently smoking quite a bit, its looks like white smoke to me and smells like petrol. i have not had it set up yet and everything is new except the turbo which was just rebuilt by me(so i dont know how good it is) any ideas? could fueling cause this?

i know the ideal thing would be to take it to a r/r but i dont have any of that in my area i'm affriad:( so any help, tips usefull. it also stuters if i put my foot down. i have engine oil in the dashpot 10w40 if that helps. also have the t peice trick as before the new head it would loose power just when boost was about to come on and that solved it.

You need an afr gauge.

I seem to be having a little pinging, 4th gear on light loads I can hear what sounds like pinging, however I can't hear it when using my Dett cans, so going to knock s couple of degrees off

White smoke is usually water (steam).

Has it been smoking immediately after the head change or has it developed after?

Sounds like the head gasket has gone to me.

Has the new head increased the CR?

yes the head is a turbo phil speacil with all the bells and whistles so CR has lowered.its a 27cc head when before it was stock. gasket is new i have literarly done 2km if that.followed all the correct steps when puting everything back. the smoke has been there since first start up.

i have an afr waiting to go on, waiting for the welder/electrician to wire it up/weld the "bung" for the lambda sensor

You don't need an electrician, even I can wire one up, its just 2 wires, one to 12v, the other to earth

still need to get the lambda boss welded to the exhaust and he was going to do it for me as i dont have a welder...:(

so you guys recon thats should be my next step wire the afr guage up?
