Well it's almost time to try and get the new engine in the car, but first I need to get the old one out. The simplest option looks to be to lift the engine out the bay with a hoist, as the brake lines don't really need to be touched.

Is it worth buying a hoist or renting one?

Also, is it possible to do it without a hoist? By dropping the subframe off the car and with a few people handy lifting the car up?

Cheers

It's easy with a hoist. And as you've noted, this means no messing with brake lines either.

I'd try to borrow one personally.

I always borrow one. Alternatively, see if anybody wants to go halfs/thirds and all share.

depnding on how precious you are about the paintwork in the engine bay, you and a few friends could lift it out - we used to do this all the time with some rope and a scaffold pole (probably explains why my back is knackered these days!)

It was easier the more that was taken off the engine to staret with to reduce weight obviously. We used to drop the car as low as possible after everything was dissconnected and jack the engine up in the bay with a trolley jack before the last lift up and over the slam panel. Not the most controlled way but it worked.

nowadays we have a hoist and it makes it much easier and controlled

If you buy a hoist you will never get rid of it -it makes things so much easier.

That sounds a fairly good idea with the scaffold pole, especially as the engine bay is going to be painted while the engine is out, and I'm sure I can get some of the guys together to give a hand. As you said I can take the majority of the ancilleries off, so it's just a block and gearbox left to lift out, which should reduce the amount of damage I do as I lift it out *tongue*

I don't have anywhere to keep it if I bought one though, the garage is rammed full of crap as it is *tongue*

Anyone nearby have one I can borrow? *tongue*

And what are people's experiences with renting one?

Renting might be a bit expensive if your not putting the engine back in on the same day.

Might be worth buying and selling on again when your finished with it if you can't borrow one
