Hi there,

I am looking for some lightweight front coil over top mounts...

The only ones I have seen are from Shuddersfield:

They also list Ali, as an option, anyone know if they are actually lighter or just thicker and weight the same?

I was considering making my own but only have 3mm steel as anything remotely suitable, does anyone know of anyone else making them? Plus I need to spend the time on other bits of the project so would just rather fit some

Cheers

I don't think I'd be very happy about driving a mini with aluminium top mounts...

Easy to remove some weight from steel ones in the right places with a xmas tree type drill/cutter.

I don't understand some peoples reluctance to use Ali instead of steel. If its engineered correctly then it will work. Have you seen what they build aeroplanes out of.

A very good point well made,

you must not confuse alumi9um with alumium alloys, they are a world apart in the better grades and tempers

I agree, ally can be better than steel, but as most are aware, there are people who make like for like items from ally and are happy to sell them as lightweight replacements, when they haven't tested them and don't have a clue where stresses will travel in the item(s).

It would be nice to see some ally top mounts but I'm just expecting someone to knock out crappy 3mm ally folded with a bolt through it brackets...

I much prefer steel items for a number of reasons and always possible to make lighter with a little thought and not a huge amount of difference to ally parts weight wise in my experience.

My Protech brackets were alloy and very good aswell as light too. They were on my car for 5 years

I seriously doubt it!
