Right, I'm about to fit some aluminium skins.

Any tips? Should I be looking to buy/borrow the tool or is there another method? (hammer and bit of wood?)

Wooden mallet and a block of steel with a couple of layers of gaffertape on it

I seriously doubt it!

what's the best method of attaching the skin at the top? pop rivets or I hear theres some fancy glues available?

I used tiger seal. They never moved even slightly. Gotta love tiger seal.

I used sikkaflex. I have a skinning tool if you want to borrow it Gary. I used blind rivets at the top as Im keeping windy windows. they where a pita, but I have some left if you want some.
