Finally, its starting to look like i'm making some progress with my car. Managed to get the intercooler setup completed today. Its a bit tight, but not too bad.

Nice install, you must be a right bender (pun intended).

Have you a big scoop in the bonet to get air to the IC?

Nice!
I'd have thought a scoop under it and a rearwards facing bonnet scoop would be preferable - assuming you had some inner wings of course - last thing you want to do is have air coming in from both sides and basically 'stalling' at the intercooler core.

If you had no inner wings, air through the grille can escape through the inner wing, as can any air you pull down through the intercooler with a front-facing bonnet scoop.

Very nice tubing mind!

yeah, i've got a pretty big scoop to sit over to one side on the bonnet.

Still quite a bit to do before it's running. There's no electrics fitted yet as i not long got it back from the sprayshop. I'm still waiting on the doors boot and bonnet getting sprayed.

Turbodave, will it make a big difference if i blow the air over it from underneath, rather than on top, bearing in mind the inner wings are still fitted?
i want as much cooling from the IC as possible given that the engine is bout 180bhp @15 psi.

You'll probably need more than 15psi to get 180hp for a start...

Aim for a power figure, or a quarter mile / lap time. The boost is whatever is needed to make the power you desire.
re the intercooler, If you have a forward facing bonnet scoop (like an imprezza) over the top of it, at 50mph you'll have an awfull lot of air going through the grill trying to escape somewhere (idealy thru the intercooler). You'll also have a load of air being rammed through the forwards facing scoop through the intercooler. These two masses of air will meet, and when they do the net airspeed will reduce (in theory assuming equal volumes and velocities) down to zero. Not good.

A rearwards facing vent - like the ERA turbo used - will create an ever so slight vacuum behind it, depending on the shape. At the very least, it will create a 'pressure free' area that air travelling through the vent (and intercooler) will want to occupy rather than anywhere else in the engine bay that will have all kinds of through-flow reducing air-velocity vortices being created due to the wierd and wonderful shapes towards the rear of the engine bay.

Don't suppose you're at a technical college / uni or anywhere that has a mini wind-tunnel do you? I did a few experiments on my degree (and later where i worked!) at Manchester Uni on the wind tunnel. Interesting stuff!
You might also be able to make one from a few sheets of perspex, some large car fans in series and a disco smoke machine - Something i've always wanted to do! Must be something on google if you're really interested!

Personally, I'd be doing a rear-facing scoop (or rearwards facing louvres)... It won't impress the Max-Powa chavs with their stick-on forwards facing imprezza vents, but will once you show them your minis rear end as you overtake them!

You MUST have some kind of ducting under the intercooler however, and make it so it's reasonably air-tight between the top side of the intercooler and the bonnet scoop.

i'll probably have a rethink then, i wasn't keen on having the big scoop on the bonnet too much as i'm trying to keep it looking as standard as possible.

I'm currently doing a BEng instrument and Control degree at Teesside Uni, so i'll have a root around and see if there is a wind tunnel or something.

When i bought the engine, it was quoted as 180BHP, i got it cheap as the lads house had burnt down and he had nowhere to keep it. Poor soul.

Unfortunately his dyno sheet went up in the fire so it's never been proven!

you could have rear-facing louvres on teh bonet, or even just a few holes! as the air speed over the bonet is very high(anyone whos ever drove with a non-properly-shut roundnose bonet can testify to this!) but properly ducted to teh grill and it should do the trick.
