Australia oi oi oi!

Thoughts on this? part of me wants to buy one & the other. like the idea of eliminating the oil leak & damping harmonics with the belt. I think i would only buy the sh kit if going a belt.

I had a drive in a car with a minispares belt kit fitted & it was impressive.
took alot of harmonics out of the engine to start & i like that no oil leak on that side.

other part of me says stay with the chain & buy the alloy cover with chain.

mainland europe near ze germans

been there.. belt got chewed after 50 miles 8 valves bent, one cam trashed, all rodbolts hobbed, piston tops marked, bearings questionable and all pushrods toast and off course a total clean and rebuild as well...

It does sound very nice though when it ran :).

Rebuild with a kent cam vernier set and the chain was made of rubber/potmetal.. ridicilous amount of stretch. gave me a headache finding out why it ran so crap.. but the cam was retarded a whole load and caused very interesting fueling problems that where very hard to figure out.

Calver sells IWIS chains for not all that much couple that to solid cogs and offset woodruff keys seem to be a bombproof setup.

That sir, is not rust, it is the progressive mass reduction system

I've been using a MS belt drive for 10 years on the hillclimber, no problems so far. I do limited mileage though and have changed the belt a number of times.

Fastest 998 mini in the world? 13.05 1/4 mile 106mph

I ran belt drive for a few years and liked it as there was no stretch as with a chain. You have to get the Dayco belt though instead of the Chinese ones that Minispares are forced to sell after a twat bought the rights to the Dayco belt from the manufacturer

I seriously doubt it!

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

I would IMHO Stick with the chain and the nice new cover Nick

Stops a lot of noise, crank and damper flywheel set up ballanced, you will have a nice smooth motor, not! worried that the belt may shat its self at any moment, have a look at Calvert's chain set up.

Brisbane ,Australia

i`ve seen way too many belt drives with dramas to bother,,, stick with the double row chain drive & re-set cam timing after a good run-in period

Yeah by the comments I have seen
It seems 50/50 some snap some don't.

I'll go the chain and the new cover, I think
I'll use the tensioner with a double row though.

Hopefully a tensioner fits with this cover

LOL is that why your sticking oin as many twin cam heads as you can Matt! *tongue*

I do like belts but have noticed the quality of the supplied belts has slipped so Pauls coment is very interesting,

After my belt faliure I started looking at puting together a setup using the short belt from the VVC K series mechaism on the back of the head, sadly yet another project thats currently shelved due to haveing a job that sucks dick....

I run a chain in mine Nick, but sadly can't comment on a belt as never had one.

Best 1/4 mile 13.2 seconds @116 mph

I think we are all old enough to remember when running belts became the rule rather than the exception. When I asked why the answer was very predictable. Belts are cheaper to produce. Some twenty years on I am still hearing of engines being destroyed because of belt failure. Look how far drive train technology has advanced but belts are still breaking.
