I was refitting the crank pulley on the engine yesterday, and turned it over a few times and heard a hissing noise from the bottom of the engine? The sound was coming out of the oil drain hole.

It was the first time I had turned the engine over with the spark plugs in, so my assumption is that the rings are letting the air get past on the compression stroke?

The engine was rebuilt (not completely by me) and had new bearings, new lock tabs etc, but had been standing a while.

Does this mean the rings are dud?

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

In short No this is normal, do a compression. Test to determine that all is well and they fall in the required parameters,
