Hi all,

noticed today im getting a fair amount of whitish smoke on hot idle. first noticed in the petrol station after pulling up. seems fairly intermittent, worse will a little revving, then goes under normal driving. Pull up, and stop, fine. turn engine off then on, smoke is back.

Only seems to do it on warm idle, cold idle is fine.

Am i right in thinking stem seals?

Was hoping to get to MITP........

THanks for advice guys.

sounds abit more like turbo seals?
stem seals will indicate more on a cold start, if the rear of the car is higher than the front

White is more moisture related. When the valve stems where fooked on the skip it was visibly blue. I'd do a compression test....

Further info. No oil in water, no oil in plenum that I can feel.

Possible knackered rings?

Any idea why it's only on hot idle?

Looks like no mitp for me :(

oil is much thinner when hot and can seep through smaller gaps
andy makes a good point too,

this is a pic of my first turbo engine, blown turbo seals caused this
actually this was a brand new turbo but the oil seal for some reason leaked

White smoke is usually head gasket..

Some possible head gasket? Gash.

Anyone recommend a compression tester?

Brett - looks a lot like that but not quite so bad!

Would turbo seals give me that intermittent smoking? Wouldn't it leave residue in plenum?

Sorry for all the q's guys, I'm new to turbo minis. Thanks for your help.

I would think turbo or valve guides, would give you blue smoke.

Looks like we're starting with compression test then.

Fairly sure I'm overfuelling, any connection?

Clutching at straws now!

I've seen this before from a knackered servo allowing brake fluid to be drawn into the inlet. Not saying that is your issue but worth a quick check

When my turbo went, it was pure white smoke, 1min. After start up, smoke on idle, once driving it was fine, boosted fine etc

I would start with compression test, as its easiest, but I'm fairly certain its your turbo.

Thanks rob, sadly no servo fitted.

I'll start with compression test and see how we go.

Thanks for advice guys. Must remain positive.

not in the plenum, this is oil straight into a hot exhaust, exhaust gas turbine oil seal is the one im thinking, and the one in my pic was at a rate of about 10l per hour.... *surprised*

Ok seems a likely culprit.

Is there any test I could perform to rule it out?

Is it a tricky job to replace? Would be my first turbo job...

If you want to check the turbo hot side oil seals, take the down pipe of and have a feel in that and the turbo for oil. There will be dark oily residue if oil is passing the seals.

Ok, thats fairly simple. will have a crack at that later.

Update for today, drive to work, and no smoke at all. All very odd. The last time i blew a turbo it was somewhat more dramatic......

problem seems to have diagnosed itself by dramatically weeing itself half way home. no water, looks like it might be blowing out between the head and block? making a lot of blowing noises.

that'll be a rebuild then.

Couple of hrs tops, nice easy fix, but you need to find the cause of the blown gasket, what was it torqued down too?
