I've bought a VW Caddy rad, it's almost as wide as the gap between the headlights, as tall as the subframe to the bonnet, and about 35mm thick to go in my clubby front on my 1310 NASP rally mini, would anyone like to hazard a guess as to what I will need fan-wise to keep it cool when stationary?

I'm thinking it shouldn't need much at all, maybe a single 10" fan or am I being optimistic?!

The issue is a single fan only covers a small area......Now ally ducting like nic and madmk1 have done to thier side mounted intercoolers (Think its madmk1) now there is an idea that may work.

you want to draw as much air through the whole rad imo, i have basically the sett up you describe but a bigger rad

i currently have a 9inch fan straight onto the rad, it is enough to keep it cool but could be a whole heap better,
i am currently looking into duckting the whole rad ( rear side) through a fan ( or 2 smaller ones)

what i mean is i get enough air flow with the 9 inch fan but its only on like 25% of the rad, temps take a while to come down if the oil is hot too

I dont really want to put much ducting in as I dont want the fans to have to come on during normal driving and they will restrict natural air movement.

It will get tonnes of airflow when moving, might put louvres in the bonnet and maybe an ally shield to pull the air out above the engine, maybe I should find a couple of skinny/lightweight 10" fans and put them on a frame behind the rad, I can't see it being an issue at all with 2, maybe start with one and see if it requires a 2nd one! It's about 600mm wide with ally fins so I'm still wondering if fans will ever come on, will be running an oil cooler too.

temps go up when the car stops my fan comes on after a drive and maybe 2 mins of idling it doesnt really go off untill i move again (although water temps stay well within limits), airflow is not the problem the rad is warm to the touch infront of the fan but redhot 1 inch outside the fan the area of the fan is the problem on mine,
my rad is about 600x300mm ally

bretts got a little one !

if you use the big mk1 metro size rad ,i have found i can use a tiny little 8 incher and that gives total satisfaction in any traffic .

You shouldn't need a hugh fan, you just need some air flow through some of the radiator. Put in what you can fit and try it, no amount of calculations will give you a definate answer.

*laughing*

The rad core is 590 x 285 x 30 so it should work well. I'll put some brackets on the rear to allow for fans should it be deemed necessary!

Surely ducting like above would make the fan loads more efficient, but made the rad. Worse when the fan is off?

You would need to duct the front of your car into the fan to make that work well.

I've just added a horizontal duct to mine to push the majority if the air into the rad. Then stuck a 9" fan on the front. Similar setup with no duct works OK on Johns car

You have to consider the air gaps through the radiator fins. If the fan hole is bigger than all the little holes added up then it will be fine. It is surprising how little air can get through a rad.
