I intend to tap the block at the back for a water feed to my turbo, as a few people have already done.
my main question is the benefits of tapping using a taper tap. google says tapered female threads are uncommon. but parallel female thread can be used in conjunction with a male taper thread to give a water tight seal.
I have a decent hall first and plug parallel tap and a taper thread to go into it. I have taped some nice thick scrap and it seems fine tightens nicely and seams good to me. Now should I go ahead with this on my block with a fair amount of ptfe, or get my mitts on a taper will it seal that much better?

Cheers
James

I design lots of pipework etc for water applications and although you can fit a male paralell into a tapered female it is bad practice as you get poor thread engagement normally only on one or two threads.. I normally where possible (pressure dependant). Use paralell to para for low pressure and seal with a dowerty washer and for higher pressure I use taper threads.

What taper tap size ate you thinking??

Northamptonshire.

If you look at the back of your block there should be a bolt for draining water out the system its quite usless on the mini as its impossible to get to but use that as your water feed no need to drill holes then :)

Just spoke to the shop floor guys and we cannot find the 1/4" bsp taps, i suspect they are being used on site somewhere.

but on the up side, you may be able to use the water drain as RidingLow has suggested.

I used a parallel tap on my block then sealed it with high temperature silicon from tool station, and its been fine up to now, a little tip of mine as well is to use the tap like a taper, tap out the hole so far and keep trying the fitting in the block till you get a nice tight fit, the parallel tap as got a taper to it as long as you dont buy a plug tap, hope this helps..

only 'A' blocks and early 'A+' blocks have this drain plug. Most A+ blocks don't.

Is it A-Series only? I think it should be...
So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

As sprocket says, I had to drill and tap my block, just to add the boss will be there even though it needs drilling and tapping out..
